Recurrent tectonic activity in northeastern Brazil during Pangea breakup: Constraints from U-Pb carbonate dating

چکیده
Abstract Carbonate U-Pb dating of samples from rift-bounding faults intracontinental basins in the Borborema province, northeastern Brazil, indicate recurrent tectonic activity during Pangea breakup lasting for >150 m.y. Late Triassic to Paleocene, reactivating inherited strike-slip Neoproterozoic–Cambrian shear zones. ages that brittle deformation started some 80 before previously known, most likely related rifting along incipient Central Atlantic. The subsequent Cretaceous opening South Atlantic caused renewed fault and basin development. Furthermore, Cenozoic is indicated, suggesting structural inheritance continental-scale zone system has been responsible accommodation stress Mesozoic present day.

متن کاملU/Pb and Pb/Pb zircon ages from granitoid rocks of Wallagga area: constraints on magmatic and tectonic evolution of Precambrian rocks of western Ethiopia
The Precambrian rocks in western Ethiopia consist of highand low-grade terranes intruded by granitoids with a wide compositional spectrum. The formation ages of these granitoid rocks are, so far, poorly understood. Single-grain zircon Pb/Pb evaporation and conventional U/Pb dating conducted on four granitoids places time constraints on their emplacement and tectonothermal events. Three granitoi...
متن کاملU–Pb geochronological constraints for Paleoproterozoic evolution of the Core Zone, southeastern Churchill Province, northeastern Laurentia
The Core Zone of the Southeastern Churchill Province, northeastern Laurentia, is a composite of Paleoproterozoic lithotectonic domains assembled in the vise between obliquely colliding Archean Superior and North Atlantic cratons between ca. 1860 and 1810 Ma. Detailed geological and U–Pb geochronological studies of domains in the southern Core Zone highlight significant differences in Archean an...
متن کاملU-Th dating of carbonate platform and slope sediments
—Absolute chronology of marine sediment beyond the C age range provides a test for models of climate change and has many other applications. U-Th techniques have been used for such chronology by dating corals, but extending these techniques to marine sediment is complicated by the presence of significant initial Th—both in detrital material and scavenged from seawater. In this study, we investi...
متن کامل(U-Th)/(He-Pb) DOUBLE DATING OF DETRITAL ZIRCONS
Geochronology and thermochronology on detrital material provides unique constraints on sedimentary provenance, depositional ages, and orogenic evolution of source terrains. In this paper we describe a method and case-studies of measurement of both U/Pb and (U-Th)/He ages on single crystals of zircon that improves the robustness of constraints in each of these areas by establishing both formatio...
